Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) refers to any sudden trauma from an external source that causes damage to one or more brain functioning areas. For adolescents and young adults, this could involve a car accident, falling off a bike, falling while playing sports, or something piercing their brain, such as a knife. In older adults and very young children, we see TBI occurring after a fall.

One of the most prominent signs of TBI is altered consciousness. Other symptoms may include dizziness, headache, confusion, blurred vision, memory problems, fatigue, behavioral changes, and more. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and may eventually lead to permanent disability or death.

A neuropsychological evaluation for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is quite common. Injuries or incidents that trigger such an evaluation are slip and falls, motor vehicle accidents, and blunt force trauma. Common complaints endorsed shortly after the incident include headaches, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, feeling in a fog, etc. The degree of impairment depends on the severity of the injury. Therefore, we will conduct a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation to assess different areas of the brain to see the impact done by the injury. Furthermore, our evaluation will assess the behavioral (e.g., lack of motivation) and emotional (e.g., depression, anxiety, etc.) sequelae after the injury to identify how those factors may be impacting your daily functioning. Our evaluations are done by administering paper-pencil type of tests, sensorimotor tests, questionnaires, collateral interviews, record reviews, and thorough interviews with you that will cover your functioning before the injury, during the course of the injury, and after the injury. Last, our evaluations will include evidence-based treatment recommendations to get you back to living your best possible life.

Our Approach

Our evaluation will assess different areas of the brain to see the impact done by the injury. It typically involves:

  • Consultation with the client or parent of the child being assessed to gather more information on specific reasons why the evaluation is needed.
  • A review of medical and mental health treatment records. This will help us have a better understanding of the client’s history of psychological/neuropsychological functioning.
  • A collateral interview with the parent or family member to help us gather additional information about the individual’s general and psychological/neuropsychological background, behavior, responses to prior treatment, and timeline of when difficulties/problems began to occur.
  • A clinical interview with the client.
  • We will administer a battery of neuropsychological tests to objectively assess for mental health and neuropsychological symptoms and disorders.
  • We will identify any necessary treatment recommendations and follow-up plans.
  • We will meet with the client or parent to review and discuss findings.

Last, we will write a comprehensive report in simple language that integrates our findings and give it to the client or parent.
